What is a non-medical caregiver?

Non-medical caregivers provide personal care, companionship and/or homemaking duties—all with the goal of helping people remain independent and stay in their own homes as long as possible.

Rules may vary by state, but non-medical caregivers are generally employed by home care agencies and provide one-on-one care in clients’ homes.

Is it valid in all states?

In the Know’s Caregiver Certification series is valid for caregivers in these states:

AL, AK, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, HI, ID, IN, IA, KS, KY, MD, MI, MS, MO, MT, NJ, ND, NC, OH, OK, OR, RI, SC, SD, TX, UT, VT, WV, WI, WY.

A handful of states have strict requirements for initial training. If you live in AZ, AR, GA, IL, LA, ME, MA, MN, NV, NE, NM, NY, VA, PN, VA, or WA, follow your workplace guidelines, contact your state’s Board of nursing, or look for training from your local community college.
