This year, intheknow is proud to celebrate 20 years of excellence in caregiver training!

In honor of our 20th anniversary, here are
20 things you may NOT KNOW know about intheknow.

These are all the little things that make us the training provider
you rely on to train, engage and RETAIN your caregivers!

1. A slash to the budget inspired the dream. Linda Leeley, BS RN, Founder and President of In the Know Caregiver Training

Linda Leekley, BS, RN was working as a nurse educator in the 1990’s when, she says, “Medicare did one of their reimbursement cuts, and the first people let go were educators. I knew that meant caregiver training was going to fall into the laps of extraordinarily busy nursing supervisors who barely had time to do their own tasks—let alone take on something new.”

2. Caregivers deserve better.

Linda knew busy supervisors would be forced to use re-purposed nursing CE’s, outdated videos, and copies of articles from nursing journals to “train” their teams. And, she knew none of that was appropriate for hardworking caregivers who provide difficult (and sometimes dangerous) hands-on, client care every day.

3. An idea and a dining room table.

While sitting at her dining room table with a cup of tea and a notebook, Linda asked herself, “How can I help busy nursing supervisors train their hardworking caregivers?” That’s when she began creating a unique, new style of inservice. One that kept the needs of supervisors—and the caregivers on their teams—in solid focus. And there, in the dining room of her Durham, NC home, intheknow was born.

4. Surrounded by innovation and medicine.

It didn’t take long for Linda to expand out of her dining room. But intheknow remains headquartered in Durham, NC, the “City of Medicine,” where nearly one in three people work for a healthcare-related company.

5. A singular focus on caregivers.

CNAs, HHAs, PCAs, and other frontline caregivers started out as—and remain—the sole focus for intheknow. Why? Because they deserve our undivided attention. Caregivers play a crucial role on the health care team, yet they have the least amount of pre-employment education of any clinical employee. Effective continuing education is crucial for their professional growth!

6. In 1998, Handwashing was our first topic.

Now, our library exceeds 200 modules. And, new topics are added all the time! Click HERE to see our entire catalog. Do you have a new topic suggestion? Email Stacey, our Director of Clinical Content anytime and let us know what topic you’d like to see in our library!

7. Every topic is written by a team of Registered Nurses.

All our training materials continue to be written by Registered Nurses who have trained and supervised caregivers in every environment—from the college classroom to the client’s kitchen table. Our team of writers has experience in home care, hospice, long-term care, hospital nursing, healthcare management and staff development. They perform extensive research to make sure each course contains the most recent information.

8. Keeping topics current.

If you had cancer, would you want a doctor that followed a treatment plan he learned 10 years ago? Probably not. The same holds true for caregiver training. A lot can change in two years! That’s why we review and update our topics every two years. We believe you should never use training materials that are over two (2) years old.

9. Our original, newsletter-style lessons made learning practical and fun!

Our “classic” format was introduced in 1998. Linda’s idea was to create a product that was easy for nursing supervisors to use—but also fun and full of practical tips for caregivers! While most of our customers have since moved on to our e-learning option, we remain the ONLY caregiver training provider that offers the PDF newsletter-style format that can still be used for instructor-led, classroom training or distributed for independent learning.

10. The steady march toward e-learning.

Initially, our modules were offered in paper format only. Floppy disks came next! Then, CDs and email took over. Today, customers download PDF topics within minutes of making a purchase! But, technology marches on . . .

11. E-learning took over as the preferred method of delivery.

About 8 years ago, we started converting our “classic” topics into e-learning. Now, caregivers can complete courses anytime, anywhere—even on a smartphone! And educators can track each caregivers’ progress to ensure that everyone is up to date! Want to check it out? PREVIEW A COURSE!

12. No passive videos or dusty, old powerpoints allowed!

All our e-learning courses are developed by a brilliant team of instructional designers who know how important it is for learning to be interactive, engaging—and frankly—fun! Our e-learning is more than just a passive video or a dusty old PowerPoint. We use the latest technology to move the learner through the material, keeping them plugged in and asking for more!

13. We provide the only TRUE blended learning plan.

There’s no doubt that e-learning has revolutionized caregiver training.  It’s convenient, easy, interactive and engaging.  It makes tracking and reporting a breeze for compliance. But that doesn’t mean classroom learning is obsolete.  There are still times when instructor-led training is an absolute must! And intheknow is the ONLY caregiver training provider that offers a TRUE blended learning plan. Our BLENDED plan includes an all-access pass to 120+ e-learning modules and your choice of 12 Classic PDF modules.

14. We know we can’t do it alone.

intheknow maintains an Advisory Board consisting of registered nurses, human resource professionals, and instructional designers. In addition, we regularly solicit and encourage feedback from all our customers.

15. Our caregiver challenges are a big hit!

Our goal has always been to keep caregivers and their supervisors intheknow. That’s why the most popular downloads on our FREE Resources Page are the Caregiver Challenges! Supervisors use them to identify knowledge gaps and plan caregiver training. Caregivers look forward to the helpful reminders and practical tips they can begin using right away.
