Recognizing & Managing Catastrophic Reactions



Do your caregivers care for clients with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury, PTSD or people who have had multiple strokes? If so, it is vital to learn about catastrophic reactions. This inservice defines a catastrophic reaction, discusses common triggers and arms caregivers with the communication and behavioral tools they need to help prevent and/or manage these “super anxiety attacks.”

  • Define catastrophic reaction.
  • List at least 10 things that can trigger a catastrophic reaction.
  • Develop a plan for responding to clients who are “in the moment” of a catastrophic reaction.
  • Describe at least 5 things you can do to prevent catastrophic reactions in those who are at risk.
  • Demonstrate calm and rational communication and behavior with all clients at risk for catastrophic reactions.
