After completing this course, care professionals will be able to:

  • Describe the role and responsibilities of the Non-Medical Care Professional.
  • Identify different types of clients you may encounter and the duties you will perform as a Non-Medical Care Professional.
  • Apply professional standards when communicating with clients, their families and the rest of the healthcare team.
  • Practice healthy guidelines for avoiding burnout and taking care of yourself.

Honoring Patients’ Rights

After completing this course, care professionals will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of the Patient Bill of Rights.
  • List at least five rights all patients are entitled to receive.
  • Describe the patient responsibilities that go along with each patient right.

Honoring Confidentiality & HIPAA

After completing this course, care professionals will be able to:

  • Explain why confidentiality is important for quality client care.
  • Discuss HIPAA and its requirements.

Helping with ADLS

  • Discuss the importance of maintaining independence with IADLs.
  • Assess clients’ abilities and encourage maximum participation in IADLs based on those abilities.
  • Discuss how best to help clients with shopping, meal preparation, housekeeping and transportation within the community.

Guarding Against Abuse

After completing this course, care professionals will be able to:

  • List at least three common types of abuse seen in the elderly.
  • Name at least three signs (each) that may mean a client is being physically, emotionally, sexually or financially abused.
  • Explain how healthcare workers can help prevent abuse.

Guarding Against Neglect

After completing this course, care professionals will be able to:

  • Describe neglect and your role in recognizing and reporting it.
  • Name at least three signs of neglect.
  • Explain how healthcare workers can help prevent neglect.

Preventing Infections & Falls

After completing this course, care professionals will be able to:

  • Discuss how germs are spread and how you can prevent infections in your clients.
  • Describe the factors that place clients at risk for falls and the interventions you can take to prevent them.

Protecting Against Fires & Disasters

After completing this course, care professionals will be able to:

  • Identify at least three actions you can take to keep clients safe from fires.
  • Demonstrate disaster readiness by assembling a disaster preparedness kit.

Observing and Documenting Client Care

After completing this course, care professionals will be able to:

  • Describe the difference between objective and subjective observations.
  • Identify what should be considered an abnormal observation and take the necessary course of action.
  • Discuss the importance of thorough and accurate documentation of care plan interventions.
  • Complete your documentation according to the guidelines presented in this module and the policies of your workplace.
